Holography
Investigations into spatial mark-making in, through, and beyond the holographic volume.
Centre Column – Blue
Produced in collaboration with August Muth, building on previous explorations of gestural, drawn, marks in space.
Colour Study
A collaborative work with Eric P. Krantz, part of the Art of Collaboration series, produced at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in the early 1990s.
Twenty Three Nine
Pepper collaborated with Eric P. Krantz at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne on a series of colour studies in 1993, exploring colour and spatial relationships in holography.
MVF
Specially made to commemorate family loss. Each rectangle signifies a member of a family and their connection to one another.
Curved Shadow
A reflection hologram created using liquid as a drawing medium, in which shadows and marks extend across and in front of the picture plane, exploring spatial depth and surface interaction.
Reference
Small cross-like areas of the photographic emulsion have been scratched away to define the corners of two luminous rectangles and the suggestion of a third.
Turning the Page
A spontaneous sketch exploring the graphic activity of ‘shading’, made dimensional through the process of holography.
Textured Corner
A study exploring how holography can create the illusion of surface texture and depth through the movement of light and marks.
Centre Level
A holographic study showing the interaction between shadow, surface, and depth through the alignment of six protruding lines.
Centre Column
A combination of hand-drawn gestural lines with holographic spatial marks.
Six Lines Folded
A study exploring tilted and folded line structures, developed during early PhD research at the University of Reading.
Corner Level
A holographic study investigating the interaction between linear shadow, surface, and depth.
Square Eclipse
A reflection hologram in which the shadow of a rectangle appears between the viewer and the holographic surface.
11 Columns
A reflection hologram exploring the spatial placement of opaque and drawn columns within a single image plane.
PhD
Holograms as PhD doctoral thesis submitted to the University of Reading. An early example of a practice-based submission by an artist.
Line Drawing
Line Drawing combines holographic and hand-drawn lines, exploring how marks, shadows, and reflections interact across space. Once processed, the holographic image is fixed, but additional marks allow the work to evolve over time.
Drawing Series
A series of five reflection holograms exploring how minimal drawn information can still convey the illusion of a three-dimensional cube.
The Addition Series
Three works investigating the use of points, lines, and planes as a support for drawing in space.
Line Addition
Probably the most well-known early work in holography produced in the late 1980s. It developed from earlier kinetic light projections and acted as a starting point on which later experiments and research were based.
Face to Vase
Exploring a familiar graphic illusion by placing lines in physically different spaces. Do the edges of the shape exist, or is this a misconception?
Point Addition
125 points of light suspended within the volume of this reflection hologram define a cube. Part of the Point, Line and Plane Addition series of reflection holograms, produced in collaboration with Light Fantastic, London.
Plane Addition
Part of the Point, Line and Plane Addition series of reflection holograms, produced in collaboration with Light Fantastic, London. This work began to explore aspects of drawing using holographic recordings.
Vertical Hatch
Investigates how hatched lines can define and reveal volume through a kinetic, spatial drawing.
