Hand-drawn marks act as shading and surface textures within the confines of a continuous line which defines the edge of a graphic cube.
The shadow of the exterior line is visible in front of the drawn background, in the space between the viewer and the picture plane.
As with many of Pepper’s holograms, holographic lines are combined with physical lines, marks, and spaces added after the holographic plate has been processed. This was an intentional step in an attempt to align the process of making more closely with the process of drawing.
It is always possible to add more to a drawing, or erase sections. With holography, once the plate is chemically processed, its image is fixed.
Here, the outline (straight lines) is holographic, and the other marks were added several months later, and in a different physical location, giving time for reflection, consideration, and an opportunity to develop the work outside the darkness of the holographic studio.
The hologram was made as part of an Artist in Residence at the Museum of Holography, New York. The subsequent lines/marks were added in Pepper’s London studio.
