The sketched lines in Over Drawn exist between the observer and the picture plane; however, in an attempt to optically comprehend the marks, we tend to ‘flatten’ them onto the surface.
As the viewer moves past the piece, these marks appear to shift across it. This creates a constant underlying question regarding the definition of these marks: are they flat drawings, disconnected shadows, or dimensional objects?
Title: Over Drawn
Date: 1990
Dimensions: H 25.4 × W 20.3 cm ( 10 × 8 in)
Materials: Reflection hologram on glass
Edition: 3
An early developmental ‘sketch’ created in a purpose-built holography studio within the Fine Art department of the University of Reading, UK.
Flat, hand-drawn marks were applied directly to the glass holographic plate and illuminated by laser light to produce a range of shadows within the recording volume.
