ABOUT THE ARTIST

Local resident Andrew Pepper was born in Nottingham and studied Fine Art at Nottingham Polytechnic and The University of Reading.

It was during these studies that he became interested in projected light as a creative medium and began to produce three dimensional works and installations. While still a student, he won a number of contemporary art prizes and exhibited pieces in England and the USA.

His work with light led to an interest in holography, and in 1980 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to research into the medium at the Museum of Holography, New York. During his two year stay in the States, he learnt many aspects of holography as a member of the Museum staff and practically under the direction of Dan Schweitzer and Sam Moree at New York Holographic Labs.

Since returning to England, he has lectured extensively on the subject of holography at colleges, universities, schools and galleries. He has acted as consultant on a number of holographic projects which includes exhibition design and installation, lighting design, research and educational presentations. He has also published numerous articles on many aspects of holography.

In 1988 he was awarded the Lionel Robbins Memorial Scholarship for research into holography as a creative medium, based at the University of Reading.

Last year, he was awarded a Doctorate from the University of Reading, for his work there in Fine Art Holography. This is thought to be the first PhD for Fine Art Holography within the British University system.

He has exhibited his work in a number of group shows here and abroad,  in Bath, Cambridge, Illinois, New York, London, Long Island, Montreal, Vienna and Zurich.

His work in holography has most recently been recognised when he received the USA Searwater Foundation award for creative holography. Artists using holography are given this award for: “having provided a standard of excellence for the entire field.”
