Digital Graphic

DGV – Study 2

Based on the animated drawing DGV – Study 1, this variation introduces shadows cast by the graphic line construction, falling onto an implied surface beneath it.

These are apparent shadows cast by an apparent drawing: a graphic construction that exists only as a set of instructions in web-based code, generating the image each time you, as the observer, visit this page.

We instinctively interpret these virtual shadows through our perceptual and logical understanding of how physical objects cast shadows. Yet a mismatch emerges between what we see and what we expect. As the drawing rotates and shifts position within digital space, the relationship between the line construction, its shadow and the implied surface becomes unstable, challenging our assumptions about the relationship between object, drawing and shadow.

DGV – Study 4

An exploration of code as both the hidden framework and a visible graphic material. As fragments of code float, separate and rearrange, the work considers the relationship between process, image and the possibilities of unfinished work.

DGV – Study 3

Shadows are optically linked to the objects that cast them. If the object is removed, yet its shadow remains, does the shadow become an object in its own right?
