The first iteration of this installation displays a live feed of the image from a digital hologram on a video monitor.
Part of the Peripheral View series of works, it attempts to dislocate the viewer’s initial connection with the holographic image.

Title: Three Spaces
Date: 2015
Dimensions: Hologram 29 x 29 cm Installation: Gallery floor (variable)
Materials: Digital hologram, video camera, video monitor and shuttered theatrical spotlight
Produced during the Summer Lodge residency, 29 June – 10 July 2015, at Nottingham Trent University
Holograms are often displayed like traditional graphics, framed and flat against a gallery wall.
Here, the hologram is placed flat on the gallery floor and illuminated from above by a focused theatrical spotlight.
This tight rectangle of light picks out the dark surface of the holographic recording. On entering the installation, viewers are presented with both the dark, floor-based rectangle (with no discernible image visible) and a live video image of the hologram shown on a cubic video monitor.
The video monitor is illuminated by a small light source, casting a distinct shadow – a dark representation of a cube – into the space in front of the screen.
The image within the holographic rectangle becomes visible only when standing close to the surface of the hologram, where three levels of light, each punctured by a rectangular ‘block hole’, can be seen.
