Projected Light

Steam Beams

Light from two projectors is intercepted by a column of steam, which acts as a three-dimensional ‘screen’ to display (and construct) the ‘physical’ object/image.

Each slide projector contains a single, high-contrast, 35mm slide with the image of 25 white dots arranged into a rectangle.

Observers can interact with the piece by walking past it (or through it), so that their air currents cause the steam to move, resulting in changes to the location of the lines of light.

Using flat dots of light and causing them to appear three-dimensional was explored in a variety of single- and multi-projector installations. It led, in 1986, to a reflection hologram which explored a similar methodology.
