Drawn marks are visible in front of, and on the surface of, the holographic plate.
A central rectangular section has the holographic emulsion removed to leave ‘sketched’ apertures through which light passes and reflects back from within the framed surface.

The piece was produced over two years. The holographic recording of drawn marks was made in 1980.
The following year, parts of the holographic emulsion were removed in the central rectangular area, producing what amounts to another set of drawn marks due to the absence of matter (the original recording emulsion). These marks (apertures) allow the light used to illuminate the piece to pass through and reflect back from a blue-coloured area at the back of the frame.
This combination of holographic marks and apertures has been a recurring process in Pepper’s holograms.
