Experimental studio research exploring the manipulation of a single image projected through the studio space to produce a three-dimensional field of light.
Multiple translucent synthetic fabric screens, hung in the centre of the studio space, intercept light from a 35mm slide projector.
Each screen captures a portion of the light/image and allows it then to pass through to the next screen, multiplying the same image throughout the studio space.
Title: Light Field
Date: 1977
Dimensions: Studio space
Materials: Synthetic fabric screens, 35mm slide, slide projector
Edition: Unique
Notes: Developed during Pepper’s BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art at Trent Polytechnic (now Nottingham Trent University).
A series of experimental tests were carried out during 1977 involvingmultiple projectors and specially made high-contrast 35mm slides. The pattern of projected marks travelled across the studio space and was intercepted multiple times by the installed vertical screens, causing the marks to be multiplied in space.
Each point of light appears to ‘hover’ in space and, combined with the other luminous marks on nearby screens, contributes to the generation of a three-dimensional field of light.
Other experiments in this series: Column Projection.
