First shown in the Deep shadows? exhibition at Gallery 286, London, UK.
The curved glass sheet rests on the gallery floor, acting as a ‘frame’ for the rectangular hologram displayed at its centre.
It is illuminated by a ceiling-mounted gallery spotlight, which reconstructs the holographic image (of water appearing to be drawn marks) and casts a rectangular shadow below onto the floor.
As an observer approaches and attempts to examine the rectangular image more closely, they obscure the light shining onto the piece, making the holographic image invisible.
Close viewing denies visual access to the holographic element, leaving the more ‘traditional’ (sculptural) media accessible.
